Champions on home soil with trophy after winning title
Argentina beat Colombia to win the Copa America for a record 16th time. With this, Messi-Di Maria created a rare record of winning three international trophies in a row. After winning the title, the champions have already returned to Argentina from the United States with the trophy.
However, Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez were not with the Copa-winning Argentina team.
The champions returned home under the leadership of Fela Di Maria, who played the farewell match of his career. Coach Lionel Scaloni and the president of the country’s football federation, Claudio Tapiao, were with him.
The players were greeted by an already waiting crowd of fans when the champions arrived at Buenos Aires’ Azizah airport at 10pm Argentine local time on Monday. Later, the players joined the celebrations with the fans at the Lionel Andres Messi Stadium.
Messi is in his home in Miami. In addition, Emiliano Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico, Julian Alvarez, Nicolas Otamendi and Jeronimo Rulli remain in the United States. A few from here will join the Paris Olympics team.
