The National Garment Workers Federation has demanded an allocation of Tk 10,000 crore for the rationing of 42 lakh garment workers in the proposed budget of Tk 8 lakh crore. The organization made this demand on Friday (June 28) in front of the National Press Club in front of the garment workers symbol hunger strike program. At 11:00 am, it was presided over by the General Secretary of the Women’s Committee of the National Garment Workers Federation, Camelia Hasan, and the President of the Women’s Committee, Mrs. Jasmine Akhter, presided over it.Federation Central President Mr. Amirul Haque Amin spoke as the chief guest.Women leaders Suraiya Jasmine Ruma, Monira Munni, Sweety Sultana, Asma Akhtar, Fatema Akhtar, Kareena Akhtar, Sabina Akhtar, Shamima Akhtar and others also spoke. The speakers said that garments are the biggest industry in the country. 42 lakh workers work in this industry, 70 percent of whom are women workers. These workers account for 84 percent of the country’s total exports. The country runs on the labor and sweat of garment workers but they are paid very low wages. On the other hand, due to skyrocketing price of goods, price inflation, increase in gas-electricity-water price, increase in house rent, travel fare, increase in medical expenses, 42 lakh garment workers of the country are disoriented today. Many garment workers are living half-starved lives. They said that for the last five years, the discussion of rationing for garment workers is going on. Former Minister of Commerce, present Minister of State for Commerce, former Minister of State for Labor, many MPs and Ministers have repeatedly spoken and assured about this. But till today the garment workers remain deprived of ration. The unfortunate thing is that even in the proposed budget for the next fiscal year 2024-25, which was presented in the parliament on June 6, no allocation has been made for the ration of the garment workers, which has angered all the garment workers of the country.Immediately, in the proposed budget of 8 lakh crore rupees, it was demanded to allocate 10 thousand crore rupees to ensure rationing of 42 lakh garment workers of the country. It is said that garment women workers will march towards the Parliament if no provision is made for the rationing of garment workers in the budget.
